At eight o'clock that evening, the sun was sinking toward the round green hills on the horizon, and the Thrashmettle kids were eating a dinner of homemade pies and beans on a picnic table on the village green.

Buddy stopped eating and cocked an ear. "What's that?" he said.

Lou cocked another. "Thunder?" she said.

"Loopabella van Squee," breathed Enid admiringly.

Loopabella van Squee had white doeskin fringes, a short little skirt, and white lizardskin cowboy boots. She batted her rhinestone eyelashes and said, "Why, honey, you're so cute!
